In the world of art we often take jobs to do projects for people. This might be a business or an individual but we must take precausions for either!
When taking a job, remember to never give your personal information to the buyer, they don't need it! The only personal information needed might be the buyers phone number to get an idea of more of what they want done, and a mailing address to send the final product! If you MUST get payment no other way but through the mail (I highly suggest paypal) then get a P.O. box and do not use your physical address. This potentially puts YOU in danger from any number of phsycos, nutballs or wackjobs in the world.
When the subject of payment comes up, never let someone get off not paying you a percent down! This not only covers supplies you use but ensures that if the customer decides to bail on you, you won't go away with the debt of spending your own money for supplies and loss of time! I suggest taking 60% down and 40% upon submitting the finished product.
If the buyer is unhappy with this situation and refuses to do it, then it's likely that he was in it to scam you out of your work to start with!
Take precautions and care whenever you do work for someone.
