I'll discuss some techniques I use frequently when I do watercolors, I hope you share yours as well!
I usually use proffessional weight watercolor paper, it's pretty expensive, for a tablet of 12 peices it's 22.99, but the problem i have with it is that its not always real receptive of the paint, so it helps if you wet the whole paper and blot it dry with a papertowel first, I've been known to even take a whole sheet and go dip it in the bathtub haha (true story).
FLAT WASHING
This pretty much speaks for itself, it involves taking a flat brush of any size and moving it across the paper spreading the paint evenly.
TEXTURES
Alot of my work has textures by 3rd party objects. Salt is something I use in almost every peice. Sprinkling sea salt (or table salt if you want) soaks up the paint in small crystals and gives it that crystaline look that you see on all of my backgrounds and fairies. I often use tissue to soak up cirtain spots i'd like to be soaked up , i've also implimented sponges, plastic bags to add texture and drybrushing.
HAIRDRYERS
yes, I cheat, and use a hair dryer to dry various steps of my paintings so I can continue to get it done. The one thing to remember though is that you always want to use a cool setting and dont overdo it, you dont want to blow the paint around, or worse, paint AND salt (i invested in a good dyson vaccume!) _________________ Love your gift and it will love you back! |
